On May 3 and 4 satellite TV conference “Freedom of Information – the Way to
True Democracy” was held, organized by Yerevan Press Club, “Yeni Nesil” Journalists
Union of Azerbaijan and the Georgian “Black Sea Press” Association. The TV bridges
Yerevan-Baku were held under the regional project “Societies and Media of South
Caucasus Countries: Search for Mutually Acceptable Solutions to Regional Problems”,
implemented by three organizations with the support of Cooperation Program in
South Caucasus of Eurasia Foundation. Technical assistance in their conductance
was provided by “Mir” Interstate TV and Radio Company.
In the TV conference 10 representatives of media and NGOs of Armenia, Azerbaijan
and Georgia each took part, the Georgian delegation divided by half in Baku
and Yerevan studios. During the first day the participants discussed short documentaries
on freedom of expression and information in each of the three countries. On
the second day the results of quarterly review of Armenian, Azerbaijani and
Georgian newspapers were presented. The purpose of this nine-month study is
to determine the degree and nature of media coverage by each of the countries
of events in the neighboring countries.
