JOURNALIST ATTACKER GETS PROBATION

On February 23 the court of primary jurisdiction of Malatia-Sebastia community of Yerevan closed hearing on attacking the correspondent of “Haylur” newscast of Public Television of Armenia, Tatevik Nalbandian. As it has been reported, the incident occurred on November 24, 2005 during the opposition rally in Malatia-Sebastia community. When the rally was closing up and the “Haylur” shooting crew, covering it, went to the car, several women present at the action attacked two teenagers. Tatevik Nalbandian tried to defend the children, and one of the women hit her in the face (see YPC Weekly Newsletter, November 25 – December 1, 2005). The attacker was resident of Yerevan Anna Badalian, 1961. A few days later, the journalist felt bad. The medical examination revealed that she has medium-gravity injuries and needs surgery. Criminal proceedings were started against Anna Badalian. She was accused on Point 4, Part 3 of Article 258 of RA Criminal Code (gross violation of public order, using force and inflicting medium-gravity damage to health). The hearings on the case started on February 9.

At the session of February 23, taking into consideration the extenuating circumstances, the court sentenced Anna Badalian to two years of confinement with a two-year probation.
