On February 15 at Friday Club the press-conference of Yerevan Press Club and
“Internews” Media Support NGO was held regarding the amendments to the broadcast
legislation. As reported, on January 31 the web site of the RA Ministry of Justice
presented draft laws “On Introducing Amendments to the RA Law ‘On Television
and Radio’ ” and “On Introducing Amendments and Addition to the RA Law ‘Regulations
of the National Commission on Television and Radio’ ”. In the comment of Yerevan
Press Club on these documents it was noted that the amendments developed by
the Government do not correspond to the demands for reforming broadcasts legislation,
as imposed by the RA Constitution (see the YPC comment in full in YPC Weekly
Newsletter, February 2-8, 2007).
At the meeting with journalists representatives of YPC and “Internews” reinstated
the urgent need for radical reformation of the Law “On Television and Radio”
currently in force and criticized since its adoption day. In particular, this
referred to the procedure of forming the broadcast regulatory body, ensuring
its independence and effective implementation of its functions. At the press-conference
the concept of broadcast legislation, developed by “Internews”, the working
version of the alternative draft law of Yerevan Press Club on amendments to
the RA Law “On Television and Radio” were presented along with analysis of the
governmental drafts proposed.
