"KARABAGH CONFLICT IN THE MIRROR OF MEDIA AND PUBLIC OPINION IN ARMENIA, AZERBAIJAN AND MOUNTAINOUS KARABAGH" BROCHURE PRESENTED IN STEPANAKERT

On August 2 in Stepanakert Press Club "Karabagh Conflict in the Mirror of Media and Public Opinion in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Mountainous Karabagh" brochure was presented. The brochure was published under a homonymous project of Yerevan and Baku Press Clubs with the participation of Stepanakert Press Club, supported by the OSI Network Media Program. Previously, this book that has incorporated the findings of a complex research implemented simultaneously (March-September, 2001) and by single methodology in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Mountainous Karabagh, was introduced to the journalistic community of Azerbaijan and Armenia (see YPC Weekly Newsletter, July 13-19, 2002).

Representatives of media and most active non-governmental organizations of MK were invited to the presentation in Stepanakert. According to the President of Stepanakert Press Club Gegham Baghdasarian, the surveys held among population, decision-makers, monitoring of the leading media of Armenia, Azerbaijan and MK allowed to determine the approaches of the parties to the conflict to the Karabagh problem, as well as the possible common edges for the rapprochement of the attitudes held by the media, public and decision-makers for the resolution of the conflict. In particular, the following were studied: the commitment to military or peaceful (political) conflict resolution, the ideas about the future status of MK, attitudes to the liberation of territories occupied and the return of refugees, notions on the possible concession and real compromise, evaluations of the negotiations process and the initiatives of the international mediators.

The presentation of "Karabagh Conflict in the Mirror of Media and Public Opinion in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Mountainous Karabagh" brochure was held in an atmosphere of lively discussion. In the opinion of its participants, the findings of the research are of great interest for all the segments of Karabagh population. Besides, as of today it is the only publication that incorporated the opinion of people from the street, experts and media of all the parties to the conflict on the possible solutions to the Karabagh problem and the possible compromise.
