On February 6 “Zhamanak-Yerevan” daily was not issued. The reason for this
was the resignation of the Executive Editor of the daily Liza Chagharian that
was the actual head of the newspaper since late June 2006 (due to the arrest
and the subsequent imprisonment of the Chief Editor of “Zhamanak-Yerevan” Arman
Babajanian, sentenced for document fraud to evade military service).
In “Aravot” daily of February 7, 2007 Liza Chagharian explained her resignation
by controversies within the team. “Since newspaper is facing financial difficulties,
the editorial staff headed by correspondent of the newspaper Avetis Babajanian
tried to find funding sources. And they did find such sources – in power structures.
As I was against this, I was gotten rid of in a very delicate manner”, Lisa
Chagharian noted, in particular. She denied the information about being dismissed
by the Chief Editor of “Zhamanak-Yerevan” Arman Babajanian. “Arman Babajanian
and I had no problems between us. He learned today that I am no longer the editor
of ‘Zhamanak-Yerevan’ ”, “Aravot” was told by Lisa Chagharian, who stressed
that the resignation was voluntary.
On February 7 “Zhamanak-Yerevan” resumed publication. As YPC was told at the
editorial office of the daily, until the question of the new executive editor
is solved, the newspaper will be signed by Armineh Ohanian.
