On January 30, 2001, three professional organizations – Yerevan Press Club, Internews Armenia and the Journalists Union of Armenia – submitted their suggestions on amendments to the newly enforced RA Law “On Television and Radio” to the Standing Committee on Science, Education, Culture and Youth Issues of Armenian Parliament.
In particular, the NA Committee received the Draft Law “On Amendments and Additions to RA Law ‘On Television and Radio’ ”. The Draft Law contains amendments to the articles that regulate the activities of the Public Television and Public Radio, as well as amendments to the articles of the broadcast Law that contradict each other. The Committee is also to consider the document developed by the legal consultant of the organizations mentioned above, pointing out the articles that are controversial to the RA Constitution and existing legislation, along with the articles that have inner contradictions.
According to YPC, Internews Armenia and JUA, the amendments submitted are of top priority and must be discussed by the Standing Committee along with the amendments to those provisions of the Law that, on January 11, 2001, were recognized by RA Constitutional Court to be contradicting the Constitution of the country.
YPC, Internews and JUA support and join another Draft Law “ On Amendments and Additions to RA Law ‘On Television and Radio’ ”, developed by the leading independent Armenian TV and radio companies and also submitted to the attention of the NA Standing Committee. This Draft Law makes amendments to the articles that regulate the activities of private broadcasters.
