THE COUNCIL OF THE PUBLIC TELEVISION AND RADIO OF ARMENIA FORMED

On January 19, according to the newly enforced RA Law “On Television and Radio”, President of Armenia Robert Kocharian signed the decree on the appointment of the members of the Council of the Public Television and Radio. As stipulated by the transitional provisions of the Law and to ensure rotation, the members of the first Council are appointed for different terms of service.

The members of the newly formed Council of the Public Television and Radio are:

Tigran Naghdalian (former Executive Director of the National Television of Armenia), term of service – 6 years;

Henrik Hovhannisian (Doctor of Arts), term of service – 4 years;

Valeriy Aydinian (journalist-publicist), term of service – 4 years;

Arthur Grigorian (Director of the State Song Theatre), term of service – 2 years;

Ashot Manukian (former Deputy Executive Director of the National Television of Armenia), term of service – 2 years.

On January 20 the first Council meeting was held, during which Tigran Naghdalian was elected the Chairman and Ashot Manukian  – the Vice-Chairman of the Council.

Armen Arzumanian, previously in charge of the television news agency “Haylour”, the main newscast of NTA, is temporarily managing the Public Television of Armenia.

On January 25 the Government of Armenia made the decision to dissolve the state-owned “RA National Television”, “RA National Radio” and “‘Yerevan’ Studio” closed joint-stock companies. This is pre-conditioned by the foundation of state-owned “Public TV and Radio Company”, in accordance with the newly adopted RA Law “On Television and Radio”.

The Council of the Public Television and Radio is currently engaged in the formation of the TV and radio company.
