COURTS START CONSIDERATION OF DISPUTE BETWEEN “ZHOGHOVURD” AND BUSINESSMAN KHACHIK KHACHATRIAN

On March 20, the Court of General Jurisdiction of Kentron and Nork-Marash Administrative Districts of Yerevan started hearing the suit of businessman Khachik Khachatrian versus “Zhoghovurd” founder, “Editorial Office of ‘Zhoghovurd’ Newspaper” LLC, and the daily’s correspondent Sona Grigorian. As we have reported, the matter of the suit was the article “‘Zhoghovurd’ Daily Demands Public Apologies from Khachik Khachatrian” ("Zhoghovurd",  December 22, 2012). The suit was taken into consideration on January 25, 2013. The businessman demanded from the respondents a refutation, discrediting his honor, dignity and business reputation, and pecuniary remedies of 3,200,000 AMD (about $ 7,600): 3 mln for moral damage, caused by libel and insult, and 200,000 – attorney’s fees (see YPC Weekly Newsletter, February 8-14, 2013).

In their turn, the founder of “Zhoghovurd” and Sona Grigorian had brought a lawsuit against Khachik Khachatrian for his insulting statements about  Sona Grigorian (this incident made the story of the abovementioned article). The suit was taken into consideration by the Court of General Jurisdiction of Arabkir and Kanaker-Zeytun Administrative Districts of Yerevan on December 28, 2012, demanding public apologies from the businessman. Later the case was addressed to the Court of General Jurisdiction of Ajapnyak and Davitashen Administrative Districts of Yerevan; the hearings will be held on April 3.

Finally, on March 22, the Court of General Jurisdiction of Kentron and Nork-Marash Administrative Districts of Yerevan should start considering the dispute on the lawsuit of Khachik Khachatrian and his company "Yerevan Poultry" versus the same “Zhoghovurd” founder and Sona Grigorian. In this case the plaintiffs contest the article "Famous Oligarch Fined for Selling Expired Eggs" ("Zhoghovurd", December 11, 2012). The plaintiffs demand a refutation and compensation of moral damage, caused by libel and insult, in the amount of 3 mln AMD. The suit was taken to consideration on January 10, 2013.
