INTERNEWS ARMENIA COMPETITIONS FINALIZED

On October 26 Internews Armenia presented the results of two competitions, which were conducted under its projects funded by the USAID.

18 TV programs, films and reports broadcast from September 1, 2000 to September 1, 2001 by Armenian TV companies were submitted to the Competition of television stories of investigative journalism.

By the decision of the expert panel, the first prize in the TV programs ($1,500) was awarded to “Secret of Minas” film by Ara Shirinyan, Versus Studio.

The second prize in the same category ($900) – to “Version. An Incident in Ararat” program by Susan Simonyan, “AR” TV company.

The first prize in the category of TV reports was not granted since none of the pieces obtained the majority of the votes of the panel members.

The second prize in this nomination ($300) was awarded to “School # 37” report by Vagharshak Nakhshkaryan, “Tsayg” TV Company.

Besides, the TV companies that have broadcast the award-winning stories got computers as incentive prizes.

The second Internews Competition, “The Women of Armenia”, aimed at promoting the non-commercial documentary journalism and more active coverage of women issues.

Out of 37 scripts submitted to the competition six were selected. The winners were granted funds ($1,500-$5,000) to shoot documentaries on the scripts presented. These were:

"Autumn without Adam" – Project Director Susan Simonyan, "Don Askarian Production" studio;

"The Miserables" – Project Director Edik Baghdasarian, "Versus" studio;

"Abortion" – Project Director Lusineh Gevorgian, "43.5" studio;

"Home at Last" – Project Director Narineh Malian, "Brevis" studio;

"At the Bottom" – Project Director Hrachuhi Bostanjian, "Kyavar" studio;

"I am a Refugee" – Project Director Nikolay Davtian, “Mir” Interstate TV and Radio company.

During the event organized by Internews the award ceremony of the Competition of television stories of investigative journalism as well as the meeting with authors of “Women of Armenia” film series were held.  Films of the both Competitions were viewed throughout the day.
