HEAD OF OSCE OFFICE IN YEREVAN THINKS IT NECESSARY TO QUICKLY CONDUCT A BROADCAST LICENSING COMPETITION

On December 10 the press-conference of the Head of OSCE Office in Yerevan Roy Reeve was held, where the activities of the mission in 2002 was presented. When speaking about the assistance to the freedom of speech and media in Armenia, Roy Reeve noted that the OSCE Office in Yerevan will continue the cooperation with local journalistic associations, state structures, international partnering organizations on the improvement of media legislation, in particular, the draft laws "On Freedom of Information" and "On Mass Communication". Mr. Reeve also stressed the need to amend the RA Law "On Television and Radio", the implementation of which has resulted in a situation where "A1+" and "Noyan Tapan" TV companies have not received broadcast licenses. The Head of the mission said that OSCE follows closely the events surrounding the TV companies and the broadcast licensing competition. Roy Reeve expressed a wish for the competition to be held as soon as possible, before the presidential elections in February, 2003.

The Head of OSCE Office in Yerevan also informed that on December 12 the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Freimut Duve will present his attitude on the state of affairs with "A1+" and "Noyan Tapan" TV companies (see below).
