“Media and Elections: Resource for Free Expression of Citizens Will”

“PRESS-CLUB” CYCLE: KARABAGH PROBLEM AND THE SOCIOECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF ARMENIA

On July 11 another “Press Club” show went on the evening air of “Yerkir Media” TV company. The program host was the President of Yerevan Press Club Boris Navasardian. The guest of “Press Club” was deputy of the RA National Assembly, a member of the Republican Party of Armenia faction Hamlet Harutiunian, faced by experts, an observer of the Public Radio of Armenia Tatul Hakobian and a representative of International Center of Human Development Ashot Khurshudian. The discussion subject was the Karabagh problem and the opportunities for socioeconomic development of Armenia in a blockade.

The next program of “Press Club” cycle will be aired by “Yerkir-Media” on July 18 at 21.40.

The “Press Club” cycle is produced under a project of Media Diversity Institute, with the support of the United Nations Development Program, Open Society Institute Assistance Foundation-Armenia and the British Council Armenia.

MEDIA AS A RESOURCE FOR FREE DISPLAY OF CIVIL WILL

On July 9-10 at Congress Hotel in Yerevan a seminar “Media and Elections: Resource for Free Expression of Citizens Will” was held. The event was organized by Yerevan Press Club with the support of Open Society Institute Assistance Foundation-Armenia and the OSI East-East Program.

The presentation of the Chairman of the Committee to Protect Freedom of Expression Ashot Melikian was dealing with the problems of media self-regulation, in particular, during election campaigns. The Chief Editor of Ukrainian “Telecritica” web-site and journal Natalia Ligacheva spoke about the role of media in political processes in Ukraine. The YPC Expert Mesrop Harutiunian told about the legislative framework of media work at election times. The presentation of the YPC Weekly Newsletter Editor Elina Poghosbekian was dealing with the coverage of electoral process by Armenian media.

“MONITORING THE ARMENIAN MEDIA COVERAGE OF PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS 2007” BOOK PUBLISHED

On July 10 the presentation of “Monitoring the Armenian Media Coverage of Parliamentary Elections 2007” book was held. The publication was prepared by Yerevan Press Club under the projects implemented by YPC and ”TEAM” Research Center with the support of Open Society Institute Network Media Program and the OSI Assistance Foundation-Armenia. The book (in Armenian, English and Russian) presents the findings of monitoring the Armenian media coverage of parliamentary elections 2007, administered in two stages. At the first stage (from February 1 till March 31, ahead of pre-election promotion) 7 TV channels of Armenia were monitored; at the second stage (from April 8 till May 10, the pre-election promotion period) the study focused on 18 broadcast and print media of the country.
