MEDIA CRITICIZE THE DECISION OF CENTRAL ELECTION COMMISSION THAT IS TO REGULATE THEIR ACTIVITIES

Some Armenian media voiced criticism of the decision "Procedure for Pre-Election Promotion in Media by the Candidates for RA Presidency" by the Central Election Commission (CEC). They note, in particular, that CEC is authorized to define the procedure for pre-election promotion only in the official (public and state-owned) media, and not media in general. According to "Haikakan Zhamanak" daily, CEC was not authorized to deprive the candidates from the right to endow their promotional airtime to other candidates: this restriction can only be applied for public TV and radio. It is also illegitimate to demand the newspapers to announce the promotional pieces of the presidency candidates on their front pages.

Meanwhile, the CEC representative informed the Yerevan Press Club that the decision has not been adopted in its final version as yet, and changes of its text are still possible.
